What YouTube Content ID Pays Songwriters
What Content ID claims, why songwriters can't get direct access, and how the composition side of YouTube money actually reaches you.
Content ID is YouTube's fingerprinting system. It matches uploaded videos against a database of registered recordings and compositions, then routes advertising revenue to whoever holds the claim.
Independent songwriters almost never get a direct Content ID account. YouTube grants access to distributors, labels, publishers, and a short list of approved partners. If you only uploaded the video yourself, you are collecting as a creator — not as the writer of the underlying song.
The composition side of YouTube money is a publishing royalty. It is collected by societies and administrators, not by the YouTube Studio dashboard. Registering the work with your PRO and the relevant mechanical societies is what gives that money a destination.
Found Royalties files the composition. Your distributor files the recording. Those are two different claims on the same video, and both can be valid at once.
