BMI for Songwriters: How It Works and How to Register
BMI is one of the two US PROs you can actually join. A practical breakdown of what it collects, payout schedules, and how it differs from ASCAP.
BMI collects public performance royalties in the US and, through reciprocals, a share of foreign performance income.
Writer membership is free. Publisher membership has a one-time fee. BMI will pay you the publisher's share if you open that account; otherwise it can sit unclaimed.
